New equipment, new classes in wood shop

T

he CVE Woodworking Club is preparing for the Winter session with new course offerings and expanded open shop hours. We’re looking forward to our snowbird members as well as year-round members returning to the wood shop.

Woodworking classes offered for the Winter Session will be open for registration beginning December 1st. We’ll be offering multiple sessions of custom pen making, our most popular class. Other classes to be offered this winter include bowl making, and projects making custom toys, cutting boards, and pen stands. We’ll also be offering a Beginning Woodworking class for students and members who are unfamiliar or have limited experience with the woodshop equipment.

Members will notice some additions to our woodworking equipment inventory:

- A bench mounted drill press with expanded travel that will allow for single step drilling of wood and acrylic blanks, simplifying the process for making custom pens

- A lathe bed extension which extends the turning capacity of our Jet Lathe from 22 in to 43 in to accommodate larger and longer projects

- A floor mounted bandsaw suitable for smaller cut applications and scroll sawing.

This year the club will be offering a mandatory safety class for all its members. The class will include both a lecture component and hands on safety training of all major powered tools in the shop. The first meetings will be held in room GPA on Wed Dec. 6th and again on Dec. 20th at 10:00 am.
