The nesting doll, or matryoshka, is a beloved symbol of Russian culture, representing motherhood, family, and generations living together. It reflects the deep respect for mothers in Russian tradition and the universal nature of a mother’s love.
On January 7, the newly formed Russian Matryoshka Club held its first meeting for Russian-speaking residents, celebrating Russian Christmas with tea, snacks, and live music. Guests Masha and Natasha performed traditional and popular songs, and members joyfully sang along. Attendees also enjoyed a display of bead-embroidered icons created by Olga, who shared her longtime passion for this art.
The Russian-speaking group meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with locations based on room availability. Meetings for English-speaking participants are held on the third Wednesday of each month from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and focus on Russian culture, traditions, storytelling, art projects, and cultural experiences. Meeting locations should be confirmed with the CVE office.
The club is led by Larissa Dyan, a native of St. Petersburg, Russia. Membership is $20 for the period January 2026 through January 2027.
