The CVE Tennis Club season is underway. Team play is underway and our 20teams fill 15 of our tennis courts every morning. One court at the Clubhouse is reserved for our tennis pro, Ron Perry, to hold free weekday morning clinics and give affordable private lessons.

Our schedule and other information can be found on the CVE Tennis Club websiteat www.cvetennis.com.

The club has planned many interesting and fun tennis related events for this season, including: tennis doubles ladders for men’s, women’s and mixed players which have already started and will run through the season; a pro tennis exhibition on January 11th; intramural games giving players from multiple teams the opportunity to play with members from other teams; men’s and women’s competitive tournaments; 2-3 busloads of members to the Miami Open on March 16th; and lots more.

We often hear many tennis-related questions, so we’ll attempt to answer them in this month’s article.

There are 16 tennis courts spread around CVE at 6 different venues and there is also a new stand-alone concrete three-winged practice wall on the area east of the Clubhouse. This wall can be used to hone your skills without the need to find a playing partner to practice with you.

The courts in the Village are either an artificial grass surface at the Clubhouse (4)and Richmond (4) or asphalt surface at the Activity Center (3), Ventnor (2), Swansea (2) and Newport (1) locations.

For those who wish to play tennis at night, there are lights at both the Clubhouse and Swansea venues which are on from dusk to 10:00 PM.

The courts are mostly booked by the CVE Tennis Club for use by its membersduring the mornings and some afternoons but there are times that nonmembers can play during the other afternoons and evenings. The cost to join the CVE Tennis Club is $20 per year and all CVE residents are welcomed. The court schedule for all venues is posted on the gates at every venue and non-club members can schedule playing time at the CVE Staff Office in the Clubhouse. Non-club members can also participate in the tennis clinics with Ron Perry, the Tennis Pro, every weekday morning.

The Tennis Club is comprised of 7 directors who manage the organization and finances of the Club. The 400 or so members are organized into 20 teams of approximately 20 members each and there are social groups that also play on certain afternoons. When you join the Club and pay the $20 per year dues, you are assigned to a team which is compatible with your playing level and desires. Each Team elects its own captain and co-captain and is assigned two courts and a 90-minute court time each morning. Each team has its own profile. Playing levels of the teams vary from beginners on some teams to intermediate or advanced on others. Some are men, women or mixed. Teams vary from very social to highly competitive.

Once you are assigned to a team, you can choose to play every day or any day that you want. Each team is assigned a morning time slot and venue which changes weekly. Typically, 8 to 14 of the team’s members show up on any given day. Based on the number of team members that appear on any day, the captain decides the number of points played in a game (typically 7). Each player rotates to each of the 4 positions on the court (plays 4 games) and then rotates with those team members “waiting on the bench”. As your skill level changes, you can easily transfer to another team that is more suitable to your needs or desires.

The Club season runs for 26 weeks (late October through March), however there are summer groups that play during the months when the Club is not in session.

CenClub’s Tennis Pro, Ron Perry, holds morning clinics on weekdays at the Clubhouse courts, which are geared to all levels of play. For information on clinics or to request private lessons with the Pro, visit the club’s website; pick up a tennis clinic schedule at the Clubhouse Staff Office; or contact Ron directly at rmperry16@gmail.com
