Vote to expand nearby landfill delayed

The Broward County Commission vote on whether to allow the landfill south of the village to expand has been delayed until after the summer.

Waste Management, which operates the landfill located on Powerline Road south of the village, is seeking permission to increase the height of the trash from 225 feet to 325 feet.  The company is also seeking to expand the amount of land it can use for the landfill.

According to the city of Deerfield Beach, the requested expansions and growth would extend the life of the landfill by approximately 16 years.

The city has been urging the public to oppose the expansions, saying “this is not a matter to be taken lightly and requires your immediate attention and action.”

The request to expand the footprint of the landfill is expected to be brought before the Broward County Commission for a vote. However, the determination of whether the height increase will be allowed will be made by a single County Special Magistrate.

For those residents interested in contacting members of the Broward County Commission to express their opinion on the proposed expansion, their contact information is below.
