Early risers in the Cambridge area got more than just fresh air around 7 a.m. when Cambridge B President Ray Riker spotted and snapped a photo of an uninvited guest near the waters by Cambridge B and the clubhouse. The impressive visitor was none other than a full-sized alligator, casually roaming as if it owned the place.
As funny as it may be to see an alligator “out for a morning walk,” residents are reminded this is the season when alligators are especially active in South Florida. From April through June, males are on the move during mating season, while late summer brings hatchlings and mothers protecting their nests around the water’s edge. Add in the longer, hotter days, and it’s not unusual to spot these reptiles on the move in or around the lakes of Century Village East.
While they may look like something out of a wildlife calendar, alligators are no laughing matter when it comes to safety. If you see one, do not try to handle the situation yourself. Call CVE Security immediately. For alligators measuring over five feet, CVE Master Management will notify a licensed trapper to remove the animal from the property. And unlike most other matters in the Village, this policy applies everywhere—whether the gator is lounging in a lake, strolling down Century Boulevard, or taking a detour onto building property.
So keep your eyes open, especially on those early walks. You never know when you might run into one of Florida’s oldest residents looking for a little morning exercise.
