City to host Juneteenth celebration

The African American Heritage Board and the City of Deerfield Beach will be hosting the Juneteenth Celebration Freedom Fest on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Oveta McKeithen Recreational Complex, 445 SW 2nd Street, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Juneteenth, which is actually celebrated on June 19th, marks a pivotal moment in American history: the end of slavery in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, Juneteenth commemorates the day when Union General Gordon Granger announced the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued more than two years earlier by President Abraham Lincoln. This proclamation declared all enslaved individuals in Confederate states to be free.

Juneteenth has evolved from a regional observance into a nationwide celebration of African American culture, history, and progress. It is a day filled with community events, including parades, festivals, educational activities, and family gatherings. Traditional foods, music, and dance play significant roles, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of African Americans.

The holiday also serves as a time for reflection on the ongoing struggles for racial equality and justice. It underscores the resilience and contributions of Black Americans while acknowledging the painful legacy of slavery. In 2021, Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday, a milestone that amplifies its importance and encourages broader recognition and celebration.

Come out and enjoy live entertainment, food trucks, a kid's zone, empowerment sessions, family reunion tents and more!
