CVE Cancer Fundraiser Raises Over $12,000 in Community Effort

The 10th annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society at Century Village East was a resounding success, raising an impressive $12,389. Held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, in the Clubhouse party room, the event brought together residents, volunteers, and entertainers for an evening of music, dancing, and generosity. The total amount included $11,589 raised at the fundraiser along with $800 from Larry Cohen’s Flea Market event in December.
More than 250 attendees enjoyed live performances by Les Complices (Ginette Lauzon and Laurent LaBrecque), who delighted the crowd with songs in French, Spanish, and English, performing ballroom and line dance music. During intermissions, DJ Raymond LaBrecque and Rejeanne Thifault kept the energy high as Liliane Fontaine led enthusiastic line dancers. A special belly dance performance by Katia (Kathy Shorr) captivated the audience.
Adding to the atmosphere, Nancy Greenfield decorated the tables, pillars, and stage with a theme that honored cancer research and treatment. The evening’s fundraising success was further boosted by generous donations and creative fundraising efforts. Dora Edelstein of the Canadian Club presented a $700 check in appreciation of Linda Hochberg and Liliane Fontaine for teaching beginner line dance to their club members. The event also received a $1,500 donation from Rita Pikar, Susan Dove, and Susan Giordano, who organized a special 50/50 Bingo game in December and January to support the cause.
Much of the event’s success was due to the hard work of Pina Ronca, who sold tickets, donated over 25 raffle baskets, set up the 50/50 game of chance, and provided homemade cookies and bottles of wine for sale. Her husband, Fred, set up the coffee bar. Additional thanks went to Zabeeda Mohamed for her assistance with ticket sales and event coordination.
Craftsmanship also played a role in the fundraiser, with Cathy Sydlo donating handmade pens and notepads from the woodshop, while Ralph Pellatt sold birdhouses and bracelets to contribute to the cause. Jacques Pelletier, the event’s “dancing photographer,” captured memorable moments with stunning pictures and videos.
The night would not have been possible without the Office Staff—Kaitlin Carnevale, Anna Marie King, Eileen Spano, and Haley Comerford—who provided clerical and emotional support, and the custodial staff, who worked tirelessly to set up tables and chairs.
The event was a true community effort, proving that when CVE residents come together for a cause, they make a difference. With gratitude for all who participated and contributed, the fundraiser was a shining example of compassion, generosity, and the power of unity.
