CVE Woodshop Offers Hands-On Craftsmanship with Bowl-Making Classes

Mel Weinzimer

For woodworking enthusiasts, creating a wooden bowl on a lathe is a rewarding project that blends precision, creativity, and craftsmanship. At the CVE Woodshop, bowl turning is one of the most popular classes, drawing both beginners and experienced woodworkers eager to refine their skills.

The process begins with wood blank preparation, where a solid piece of wood is selected and cut into a roughly circular shape. The blank is then mounted onto a lathe, where it is carefully shaped using chisels to carve out the design. A bowl gouge is used to hollow the center, followed by sanding and finishing to enhance the wood grain and protect the surface with oils, waxes, or lacquers.

For those interested in learning this traditional craft, the Woodcraft Club will be offering bowl-making classes again in the Spring session starting in April. Registration is available at the Staff Office.

The CVE Woodcraft Club will also be displaying handcrafted wooden pieces at the Annual Spring Art Show on March 1 and 2 at the Clubhouse Party Room. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the craftsmanship of club members and students, offering inspiration for those interested in joining a class.

The Woodshop, located on the first floor of the clubhouse next to the billiards room, welcomes new members. The CVE Woodcraft and DIY Club offers flexible membership options, including a winter season membership (October–March) for $60, an off-season membership (April–September) for $30, and a monthly membership for $10.

Whether you are looking to create your first wooden bowl or expand your woodworking skills, the CVE Woodshop provides a welcoming space to learn, create, and connect with fellow artisans.
